Team India vice-captain Virat Kohli on Friday finally broke his silence on his poor performance in World Cup semi-final match against Australia, which saw him walk back to the pavilion after scoring only a run, triggering an ugly social media backlash blaming his girlfriend and actor Anushka Sharma for the loss.
"I am personally very disappointed. I have performed consistently but it was disappointing that I got such a response just for one match," Kohli said. "It makes you lose faith in a lot of people. The reactions were very disappointing," he said.
"I was hurt. At a human level, the things they said... they should be ashamed of themselves," the cricketer said. His score of a run saw India thrashed by Australia by 95 runs in the second semi-final of the cricket World Cup at Sydney last month. Australia later went on to win the cup that India was defending.
Bollywood as well as India's cricketing fraternity had come out in support of the duo after the loss to Australia produced a series of memes and jokes on social media, and even an attack on Anushka's house in Mumbai.
Apart from his failure in the crucial World Cup game, the 26-year-old Indian vice captain had a low-key tournament, with only a century in India's opening game against Pakistan at the Adelaide Oval.
The flamboyant cricketer also had a run-in with the media in the midst of the World Cup when he abused a journalist of a leading English daily mistaking him to be another scribe who had written adversely against Kohli during his failures in India's tour of England.
